Starlink Devices Recovered from Militants in Manipur, Elon Musk Denies Satellite Accessibility
Security forces in India's northeastern state of Manipur have recovered Starlink internet devices during operations in several districts, raising concerns about their potential misuse by militant groups. However, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that satellites covering India have been deactivated.
According to reports by Anandabazar Patrika, security forces conducted raids on December 13 in areas of Churachandpur, Chandel, East Imphal, and Kangpokpi districts. In addition to weapons, Starlink devices were recovered. The Starlink device, developed by Musk’s company SpaceX, provides broadband internet access anywhere in the world via satellite, which could enhance communication capabilities for militant groups if accessed.
Reacting to the reports, Elon Musk stated, “This is not possible. Militant groups in India cannot possess these devices because the satellites over India are deactivated. Furthermore, the devices do not have government authorization for use in India.”
Manipur has been embroiled in inter-community violence for over 18 months. Clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities reignited in September after a brief period of calm, escalating tensions across the state. Curfews have been imposed in five districts, and internet services remain suspended. On Tuesday, a bomb was discovered near the residence of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, prompting heightened security measures around him.
